What the experts say

We wrote to researchers and practitioners whose work we read, and asked them the questions we could not find answered in books. These are their replies, verbatim and published with their permission. Translations into Russian are ours.

Why the child refuses
Peter Gray
Research Professor of Psychology, Boston College; author of “Free to Learn”

“Children are into the future, not the family's past. It is not in their interest to learn Russian, so learning is likely to feel forced and be superficial. A few children in this situation may want to learn Russian for one reason or another. They are the ones to teach.”

François Grosjean
Professor Emeritus, University of Neuchâtel; author of the Complementarity Principle

“The question you ask is a difficult one and I won't be able to give you an answer as it really depends on what the language teaching/learning situation is in the family and in the school (aims, approaches, etc.).”

“…the Complementarity Principle is certainly one of the most pervasive aspects of individual bilingualism. Bilinguals who speak two or more languages feel its constant presence in their everyday lives. […] In the end, heeding the principle can only improve our understanding of how bilinguals acquire and use their languages, together or separately, in different situations and contexts.”

The second passage is from “On Bilinguals and Bilingualism” (Cambridge University Press), p. 75, quoted at the author’s suggestion.

Sahil Bloom
Author of “The 5 Types of Wealth”

“Yes, social wealth definitely. A connection to something that extends beyond the self. To community. To people. To heritage. A connection through time. Meaningful!”

What happens between parent and child
Dr. Laura Markham
Clinical psychologist trained at Columbia University; author of “Peaceful Parent, Happy Kids”, translated into more than 27 languages

“The problem isn't that the mother has those feelings. The problem comes when the child begins to feel responsible for resolving them.”

“Your grief deserves compassion, but it needs an adult container. Don't ask your child to prove that you won't lose each other. Protect the relationship first.”

“The goal is to hold the family's commitment to Russian while staying on the child's side—so Russian remains a language of connection rather than becoming the language of conflict between them.”

Marshall Goldsmith
Executive coach, Thinkers50 Hall of Fame, author of “What Got You Here Won’t Get You There”

“I would encourage parents to ask, ‘How can I be a better parent?’ Focus on their own behavior – not money or material things.”

“Promise just to listen and not talk. Say ‘thank you’.”

“Do not promise to do everything that is requested. Promise to do something. Then do it. Follow up to ensure that it sticks.”

Prof. Dr. Lothar Seiwert
German expert on time management, author of “Wenn du es eilig hast, gehe langsam”

“Do not try to find fifteen minutes. Give those fifteen minutes an appointment.”

“What has no external deadline needs an internal decision. And what truly matters deserves an appointment.”

“Continuity is more valuable than perfection.”

“A heritage language is not merely another school subject — it is part of a child's relationship with parents, grandparents, family stories and identity.”

Scott Young
Author of “Ultralearning”

“There are very few situations where increasing meaning-focused use is net-negative.”

“I think when the environment makes using a language expedient/beneficial, it will be used. When the environment doesn't allow that, or it is much easier not to, then both children and adults alike will rarely use it.”

Anya Kamenetz
Journalist, author of “The Art of Screen Time”

“It will be much more useful if a parent watches alongside and prompts with questions and dialogue about what is on the screen. Learning songs and poems by heart is also a good supplement.”

Adam Beck
Author and blogger on raising bilingual children; coach for bilingual families, based in Japan

“Parents continue to use *only* the minority language, even if the children respond in the majority language.”

“Parents establish and sustain regular times throughout the week (daily, if possible) where the whole family engages in playful games and activities together in the minority language. In other words, this is a defined “Minority Language Time” of 30-45 minutes where the “rule” is that *only* the minority language can be used in order to participate.”

“Parents establish “rules” like “Requests must be made in the minority language” and they carry out these rules in a persistent but playful way. For example, if a child wants something to eat or drink, they have to use the minority language or the parent pretends not to hear, or maybe they move very, very slowly if the request is made in the majority language but they move very, very quickly if the request is made in the minority language.”

“In my experience, getting a child to use the minority language more actively isn't about doing one thing, it's about doing many things, from many angles simultaneously, and carrying out those actions as fully and playfully as possible.”

Dr Eowyn Crisfield
Founder and Academic Director, Oxford Collaborative for Multilingualism in Education (OCME)

“Research consistently shows that strong language and literacy skills in the home language has a positive effect on English language development and literacy. Children who have the opportunity to continue to develop their home languages while going to school in English develop strong cross-linguistic and literacy skills. Partnering with community/heritage language schools creates bridges for children for language, learning, and identity.”
